Union University seeks a qualified individual for the position of Adjunct Instructor in Music - Percussion (Drum Kit and Ethnic Instruments).

Position Description:

  • Teach applied percussion (Drum Kit), ensemble coaching, percussion techniques, and percussion pedagogy. Candidate must have the ability to teach commercial drum kit, rhythm section techniques, and ethnic percussion in a variety of styles.
    • Courses include:
      CMU 150 Applied Lessons Freshman (Drum Kit)
      CMU 250 Applied Lessons Sophomore (Drum Kit)
      CMU 350 Applied Lessons Junior (Drum Kit)
      CMU 450 Applied Lessons Senior (Drum Kit)
      CMU 300/400 Commercial Music Lab
      CMU 472 Studio Instrumental Techniques
      MUS 155, 255, 355, 455 Ethnic Music Ensemble
      MUS 308 Percussion Pedagogy
      MUS 242 Percussion Methods
      Emphasis in: Ethnic Percussion Performance Techniques, Rhythm Section Coaching, Group Percussion coaching, and Percussion Improvisation techniques.

  • Provide direction and supervision for student chamber groups as assigned.
  • Perform in Faculty and University ensembles as directed.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance, Percussion Pedagogy, or Master of Art in Worship, and experience teaching undergraduate-level group and private percussion is required. This position also requires the ability to work in a team leadership setting and strong collaborative skills. The candidate must have the ability to teach Percussion Techniques and Pedagogy courses, as well as perform in a variety of music styles, including but not limited to classical music, popular and rock music styles including improvisation, and jazz or blues.

Preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. or D.M.A. in Percussion Performance, Percussion Pedagogy, or Worship Studies. Extensive solo, symphonic, and/or chamber music performance experience and teaching experience at the college level and/or the commercial industry is also preferred.
